This morning my Mom reminded me that I started at the Gazette 9 years ago yesterday! December 30th, 2002. DANG! I remember that day like it was yesterday. So today I was looking through the Gazette Archives to see what I've shot over the years and how TERRIBLE I used to be(haha). And came across a photo of my father that I shot in 2003 of him at a fire. I will never deny that having him around has helped me get into places and on scenes that I never would have been on if it wasn't for him! (He's on the fair right holding the light). I've had some amazing experiences over the past 9 years. Met some great people and hope to have 9 more years in this business!

After looking at a ton of 2010 years in review I decided to pick out a few photos that I wanted to post from 2010 but with a hectic and busy life sometimes there just isn't enough time to blog.
^^At 4:08 pm on April 28th a Structure Fire broke out at Old Shoenfelts Heating and Plumbing Building. The building was fully involved when crews got on scene. Building now is just being used for storage and is unoccupied. Six fire companies were dispatched for fire control and standby duties.
^^United High School cross country runner Ray Offman competes in the Cross Country District Meet held yearly at Marion Center High School.
^^On July 31st the British Car show: Roadster Convention hit the streets of Downtown Indiana. The old courthouse reflected into the hood of John Reed's 1957 Triumph TR3. Mr Reed is from Ann Arbor MI
^^At the Memorial Field House Pool on the campus of IUP the Indiana High School swim teams, Ellie Bobick swam the back stroke during the Girls 200 medley relay
^^Governor Ed Rendell made a trip to Homer City this summer to address the deplorable 119 bridge conditions. In the background the rebar that holds the bridge up is exposed in multiple places. Rendell stated that there is not enough money in the budget to fix many bridges and roadways in Pennsylvania.
^^Rustic Acres Fire: Electric company employee working to cut power off to the building to provide safer working conditions for the emergency response personnel on scene.

I'm posting things I've liked that I've shot in 2010 but have been way to busy to post all before the year is over. Sorry these are totally out of context at the moment but I'm quite proud of this shot. We went around and round in the newsroom the night I shot this photo. I (of course) wanted it Page One above the fold. The concern was that you couldn't see the young fellas face. I felt as though seeing his face really didn't matter for the context of the photo. It looked as though his head was the pumpkin and I LOVED it. I would settle for nothing less than this photo to be run over the other ones I shot. I won and the shot went front page above the fold and got SO many compliments the following few days. VICTORY!
This was shot at Reegers Pumpkin Patch Festival 2010.

I enjoy making them more interesting and about every two months or so I shoot a new photo of them. This photo actually is so pleasing to me. On the 23rd I shot a wedding for a lovely couple. I've known the bride for years through church and the church camp we used to go to. When she asked me to shoot her wedding I was excited to get the opportunity to document her day. I found out that he proposed to her at Disney World in Cinderella's Castle...and they are honeymooning back in Disney. The cakes at this wedding were amazing! 119 Homer City Accident

Today I totally lucked out when I happened to be one street away from this accident. At around 10:30 am the call went out for a coal truck overturned on Route 119 at the intersection of Route 56 in Homer City. I was on the first to arrive on scene before police, fire and ems. Eventually, one patient was flown from the scene with the chopper being landed on the road. There were a total of 3 citizens crews on scene, one chopper and 2 fire companies. All my friends were there....I absolutely love shooting those kids!

A couple weeks ago I shot some more college senior photos for a pretty sweet chick named Ratch, who is from Hollidaysburg so you know she's rad. She pretty much was ANTM all the way. I had way too much fun shooting these photos. Ratch was willing to do anything and had some great ideas that she wanted to try. My favorite part was when we were shooting outside Sprowls and a dude started yelling out poses. Too much fun!

Homer Center Baseball

The Homer Center Baseball team played Bishop Guilfoyle Catholic at the Blair County Ballpark. Homer defeated BG to become the new 2010 District 6 Baseball champions. The state playoffs start on Monday. Good luck to Homer hopefully they'll get back to BCB to play in the state championship on the 18th!

State Track 2010

For the third year in a row I traveled to the State Track meet in Shippensburg over Memorial Day weekend. Janae Dunchak won the girls high jump for the fourth year in a row and newcomer Angel Piccirillo won the gold in the 1600 and the bronze in the 800. I look forward to what Angel will do in the future...she is such an amazing runner. My favorite part when she's done is that she doesn't even seem tired. I know for a fact I would be falling over ded if I ran as much as she does. Congrats to all the local athletes for even making it to states. I say it every year it's a tough scene.

This is the 9-1-1 Media report post for the motorcycle accident. I got the pleasure of venturing out here after hearing on the scanner that this man was possible dead on arrival. He was not and Citizens' Ambulance Service and LifeFlight both worked hard to get this man in the air and on his way to conemaugh hospital. It's been a very long time since I've had a fatal accident so I was kind of nervous...but things worked out really well. And Droosh did a wonderful amazing job as the medic on scene. I love watching my co-workers in action. I just kinda love the lighting on these.

Gompers Avenue Fire

4:08 PM The fire whistles blew. I was outside in the Gazette parking lot and was walking back in when my Co-worker Jamie was coming to find me. She said there was a possible structure fire in the 1200 block of Gompers Ave. I jumped in the Gazette car and OF COURSE hit massive traffic trying to get onto Philadelphia Street. Finally I made it to Gompers...where there was smoke billowing out of a small metal building with the word "Office" hanging over the door. Access was made by the fire fighters into the building and once oxygen hit the fire...it came shooting out of the top. What a smokey blaze too! At one point the safety horns had to be blown to get the men safely out of the building because there was no way to see what the stability of the structure was. Three fire companies later and countless men and women going in and out of the building, numerous windows busted and usage of heat seeking cameras the fire was out. I'm so glad that I was working today. I've been waiting for a blaze like this for a while. I'm not morbid but like I've said a million times...bad things are going to happen regardless. I just hope I'm the one working when they go down.

On Easter I met up with the Dotts Family. I grew up with their youngest daughter Susan and her mom Karen contacted me to take some family photos while their oldest daughter, Angie was in town from Las Vegas with her family. We spent a few hours shooting around this covered bridge that is right in the front/side yard. Here are a few from our shoot. I have to say this family is extremely photogenic and minus a few minor meltdowns and lots of candy breaks everyone got through this shoot :)

Curve: Opening Day

Tonight marked the start of the 2010 Altoona Curve baseball season. Ziggy Hood, the Pittsburgh Steelers 1st round draft pick, threw out the first pitch and signed autographs for fans during the game. The Curve took on the Harrisburg Senators during the sporadic rain showers. The Curve won the game 5-1. Hopefully the streak continues. Sunday, Stephen Strasburg will be making his Major League debut at the Blair County Ballpark and tonight, the San Diego Chicken will be at the park.

Indiana V Archbishop Wood

Indiana Girls Fell to Archbishop Wood. 49-39. This team had such a great run and they should be so incredibly proud of themselves. They played hard and almost came out on top. My heart is broken with this loss. Sometimes you just get so into covering a team that when they lose it's sooo sad to cover. This was one of those games. I felt like I wanted to cry while shooting the end of this game.

Northern Cambria V Bishop Guilfoyle

I feel like I've been here before. Northern Cambria played Bishop Guilfoyle for the PIAA State Championship. Northern Cambria again came out in second place. Bishop Guilfoyle won their 6th State Championship...one of which I got to cover in 2009. It's been so neat to cover these girls from Northern Cambria for so long. They have been a tight knit group of girls who won a lot together. This year they are all seniors and will be moving on. It's sad when you work so hard for something and it slips right through your fingers...but hundreds of other teams would have killed to win 2nd place in the state this year....or even play at the Bryce Jordan Center. I feel like these girls should be super proud of what they've done.

IUP Men V West Virginia State

March Madness truly has begun. The Memorial Field House was packed tonight as IUP looked to continue their winning streak from the night before in the second day of the Atlantic Regional round of the tournament. IUP Men moved on in the NCAA D-II tournament tonight with their 91-76 victory of West Virginia State. They will play again on the IUP campus on Tuesday night. Hopefully...I will be there shooting it. However, Marion Center girls also play on Tuesday...so I may have to stick with high school basketball playoffs till they're done. Here are some shots from the night.

After my full day of basketball at UPJ, I went to Hollidaysburg High School gym where Marion Center took on Southern Huntingdon. Now, I know I worked in Altoona for a year but I don't ever remember covering Southern Huntingdon and their coach looked soo familiar...any help with his history would be appreciated. HAHA. Just kidding I don't care enough...but seriously...I know him.Marion Center took the lead early in the game and held that lead throughout. I was glad to not have to shoot everyone upset and crying and had a chance to get some celebration. Congratulations to Marion Center girls for being the D6 AA Champions.

Homer Center V Conemaugh Valley

In a word...sad is the only way I felt after this game. I felt Homer Center was going to take this game. It was such a close one till the end. The photo below is of Homer Center # 11 grabbing his arm after it looked like he got it bent back the wrong way...and if my EMT skills are correct and my X-ray vision is working, I think he dislocated his shoulder. This happened twice in the game. Once at the start and once in the 4th quarter which put him on the bench for the rest of the game.

Northern Cambria V Biship Guilfoyle

Last year I followed Bishop Guilfoyle to the State Championship for District 6 A. This year I was shooting Northern Cambria, who two year ago lost in the same game. I was really pulling for a Northern Cambria win, even though they lost in overtime both teams will still move on. I think everyone thought this was going to be a trouncing. It was a very close game. State playoffs may prove to be VERY interesting.

Indiana girls fell to New Castle today in Fox Chapel. This was the first playoff games I've shot since I've been back. I was trying to adjust to shooting again. It's been awhile because when I'm on vacation I boycott the camera! HAHA. I just feel like other people should be taking photos when I'm not working. :) More playoffs to come...hopefully one of our teams gets to the state championships in State College those are always FUN!

Rural Snow

I'm pretty sure at this point the snow is never going to go away. There are some piles of snow that are taller than whole houses. It will be really nice when we can all go sled riding in July. So in effort to not shoot anyone else shoveling, scraping off their buried cars and snow-blowing, I hit the wilderness.

Last season while shooting the Steelers, I got the opportunity to cover the Colts more than one time. When a photographer is covering the home team of their newspaper...lets say the Steelers...they shoot in the direction the Steelers are driving. So in turn you end up with a ton of shots like this of the opposing teams offense. The goal is to get the Steelers defense running toward you...because in photojournalism, backs of head are bad. I almost feel bad for making fun of this storm and all the people who were in line at Martins buying 27 rolls of toilet paper. 70 bottles of water. Batteries. and everything else the craziness causes people to buy before big storms. It really turned out to be a huge snow producer. This is the MOST insane thing I've ever seen. About 19 inches of snow overnight?! I NEVER thought this would happen. I thought for sure, we would wake up and be disappointed as per usual. Everyone in Indiana is digging out this morning. Here are some shots from around town, within walking distance of work. My thighs are on fire. Walking in the snow is a work out. There were places where it was up to my knees. Totally insanity is all I can really say!

When looking for a snowtorious feature I came across these lovely girls from St. Mary's who let me take photos of them building their German snowman named "Hans" who had a mustache and six pack abs. They worked on him for about two hours in the Oak Grove in front of Fisher Auditorium.

It all started with a technical foul in the first period which set the tone for the rest of the game. The gym at Penns Manor was packed! Penns Manor pulled it out late in the 4th after a close game that could have gone either way the whole time.

Hello from Kill Devil Hills in North Carolina. I left for vacation Sunday morning. Before we left my sister had asked if while we were down here I could shoot some engagement photos of her and her fiancee. I said that I would. Yesterday, I attended one of the most wet weddings ever, in my life. I think this was the first total washout of a wedding I have ever shot. By the attitude of the bride and groom you would never guess the weather anything but sunny. I had such a great time shooting their day and wish them nothing but happiness in their marriage. The last college football game I shot was the Rose Bowl, the last teams season I shot was Penn State, this was nothing like that. With that being said, this was the first IUP game I've shot in three years. However, I think I worked it out and came up with some decent shots. Actually, I'm looking forward to my next game to shoot in a few weeks. IUP won against Millersville 17-3. Millersville looked ultra lousy. I had to laugh because at this game, I was asked if my stuff was going to be on KDKA...no sorry...and I was asked to put someones picture in the Penn. IUP's student newspaper. HAHA. Either I look that amateur, or I Just have a babyface. At anyrate, Let's Go Hawks.

Steelers V Titans

Last night I made the trip to Pittsburgh from Altoona to Heinz Field for the first game of the 2009 NFL season. The Steelers played the Titans. The game was low scoring 13-10 and ended in overtime with a field goal by Jeff Reed. Who surprisingly turned down a contract offer the other day. Thankfully the Steelers pulled out a win. Hopefully, this won't be my last game of the season! I do think Kerry Collins was on a bender at the time. Poor guy. So I didn't get home till 5 am. But...it was totally worth it.

Camp Seph Mack held their media day this morning and this afternoon. I got there a little too late to get kids doing stuff but they were finishing up some wind surfing. Pretty neat except you can only go in the direction the wind is blowing. On the way walking back to my car I almost stepped on this baby bird that fell out of the nest. Scared the junk out of me...but it was cute...and I almost got pecked to death by it's mother.

Tonight I dodged the rain to shoot the final game of the first round of the Indiana County League Playoffs. A three game series ended tonight with Indiana winning the third game. They will advance on to play Bovard in the semi-final series which is best of five. This is the first time this season I have shot Indiana County League. I have a feeling I'll be shooting a lot more in the coming weeks.

Swing Shifts

Swinging shifts makes me ultra tired. Working Friday night then Saturday morning...ugh. Tiredness.
My story today: Laura Yevchak and her fiance' Cory Fulmer are both distance runners. Today is the day of their marriage. Today was also the day of the Citizens 5k. They ran together with Laura's bridesmaids and finished hand in hand. How cute is that?...here is my feature today. Lynn and Dick Rinkus work in the flower garden at the Christ Church along Philadelphia Street in Indiana. Also I had a family fun day at Rose Haven...Resident Naomi Wick laughs with the clowns about their hair styles.

Trauma

Okay, soooo...I never want for anything bad to happen to people. But bad things do happen. I just always hope these things happen when I'm working. When I got to work at 7 am the drive in felt as though today I would have a Trauma call it's been a while since my last one. The sun was shining the sky was blue and had nice puffy clouds...TODAY was the perfect day. At 1:40 pm a motorcycle accident went out in Brush Valley TWP. And they flew the dude...it seemed precautionary. So here are my photos. The sweet part was that around an Amish farm and the landing zone was on their property.This was after the chopper kicked up all the dirt. I couldn't decide which one I liked better sorry for putting both up.

The Indiana Fire Association held their monthly fire Rescue Drill by practicing search, entry and cutting techniques for physical rescues in emergency situations. I think it's pretty safe to say I'm so THRILLED to be back home!

Today I shot the 13th Annual Jackie Kallal Triathlon at Yellow Creek State Park. Which benefits the Habitat for Humanity.Then I sprung over the Jimmy Stewart Airport for the 50th Anniversary of the Naming of the Airport Festival. It was the first time I've been there. Pretty neat stuff.
So I worked 7-3 just trying to finish up, then off to Pittsburgh Proper for the night. YAY Ashlee's Bachelorette Party.

Yesterday I had the honor to photograph the marriage of Rebecca (Hurley) and Andrew Benson. The service was just as beautiful as the bride. The couple (though young) serve as an inspiration to all married couples. Their faith in God is so refreshing and in turn you can see God's love shine through them. I have a ton of editing to do...but i picked out a few images from their wedding Yesterday. The bridal party was a total blast as well. Everyone was just so happy and full of love.
Thank you all for making my job SO easy yesterday! Sorry Becca, I had to post the Bird poop one...what a memory!

Yesterday and Today I made the 190 some mile round trip to Shippensburg to shoot state track for the Indiana Gazette. How much fun did I have? Well, I actually did have a ton of fun. Minus the driving. It was brutal, shown today by getting off at the Breezewood instead of Bedford Exit from the Turnpike. Thankfully it only put me one mile extra on my trip from yesterday to today. Who would'da thought. So here are some photos from the days. Congrats to the local kids who won medals. And to the ones who even made it to States. It's a pretty tough scene.

Today i took a trip to Bedford for Bedford County Day. They had such a beautiful day for their event. In Altoona, the weather was raining and gloomy.
Even though today was a total Bedford County Bust because the paper won't have these photos in them...this is my butty Max. I wanted to take him home. He was handing out the bullitins for the event. How adorable.
